Farms Committed to Agriculture

A little background on this page....

This list is small at the present time. This is due to many factors. Therefore, before I get into the nitty gritty, I would like to remind you that if you're looking for a particular farm to be on our list, but they're not, that DOES NOT mean they are not committed to keeping their land in use for strictly agriculture. If you're wondering about your favorite farm's stance, we do encourage you to ask them if you feel inclined. BUT, we want to remind you that they can choose not to answer and that does not mean that they support ag land being used for solar, wind, or BESS. We do not condone harassing farms or calling them out. We do encourage you to continue supporting them.

This is a hard topic that has become political. We do not believe that farming or food should be considered political. Here at Blooms with Joy, we don't view this topic as political (I'll explain why later), but we want you to understand that some farms may not want to enter this ring for those reasons and that is okay.

We highly encourage you to support ALL local farms. No matter where they stand on this line, or if they're on the line at all. At the end of the day, if our communities do not support local farms, local farms will not exist. PERIOD.

This list is designed for those who would like to shop from these farms first before visiting others.

So, why the list?

We have had a handful of our customers ask us if we were ever thinking about leasing our land to solar, wind, BESS, and projects of the sort.

Our short answer: No. Never.

Through further conversation we've come to understand that customers are asking these questions because they care about where their food and specialty crops* come from. They want to ensure they're able to source locally produced goods and worry about the loss of agricultural land that produces their favorite NY grown apples, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet corn, carrots, grapes, etc.

We understand the challenges farms face. We understand the diminishing choices customers have for purchasing locally grown goods.

If we're honest, it's tough out here for both the producer and the consumer.

We decided to take on this project so that NYer's may not only support local agriculture, but so that they can ensure their favorite local farms have enough support to continue farming for generations to come. Without community support, farms may need to make a decision they never planned to make.

*Specialty crops meaning, but not limited to, ornamentals (flowers, for us) and maple syrup. Those two being the most tangible examples in our region.

The facts:

Everyone needs food to survive.
Locally grown food is FRESH and more nutrient dense than food grown elsewhere and shipped in. As produce ages, it's nutritional value decreases. This begins as soon as it is picked.
We do need alternative sources of energy.
We cannot rely on ONLY fossil fuels forever.

None of that is political, yet politics has reared its ugly head by telling you that these things ARE political and that if you do not side with them completely (whichever side it may be) that you are wrong.

We don't think so.

We stand on the fact that two things can be true at the same time.

You can want to preserve agricultural land for the production of food and other grown goods while also wanting to create different energy sources in places that do not infringe on agriculture.

That doesn't fit the volatile political climate that we are currently living in though.

If you choose not to support our family farm because of this, that is okay! We vow to always be here with a smile and without judgement if you ever change your mind.
